SEE MONSTER was a large-scale public art installation created as part of UNBOXED: Creativity in the UK, transforming a retired North Sea offshore platform into a landmark cultural project on the seafront at Weston-super-Mare.

As part of the programme surrounding the installation, a series of large-scale drone light shows were staged above the structure. Working with SKYMAGIC, ON THE SLY was commissioned to create a bespoke musical soundtrack for three drone performances designed to reflect the themes explored by SEE MONSTER.

Using a fleet of 400 drones flown above audiences of more than 70,000 people across the event series, the shows translated key ideas behind the installation into aerial imagery in the sky. The performances referenced themes of reuse, renewable energy and the great British weather, bringing the story of the installation into a shared public spectacle above the Weston-super-Mare coastline.

The soundtrack combined original scoring with sound design and spoken voices recorded locally in Weston, developed in collaboration with sound artist Joseff Harris. These voices helped ground the show in the community around the installation while giving the drone choreography a distinctive narrative layer.

The result was a series of drone performances that extended the SEE MONSTER project beyond the installation itself, transforming the seafront into a large-scale shared moment for audiences across the town.
