ON THE SLY worked alongside Pixel Artworks on Chromatic States, an immersive installation at Outernet London exploring how colour, light, sound and space combine to influence emotion.
Built around the idea of experiencing colour through more than sight alone, the installation moves visitors through three emotional states — Tension, Float and Wonder — each with a different colour language, architecture and sonic identity. ON THE SLY created the audio across both spaces, developing the overall sonic approach and designing separate spatial mixes for the Now Trending and Now Arcade environments, tailored to the movement and architecture of each room.
The creative approach explored how different sensory elements can work together to influence perception and feeling. Each environment followed a different emotional direction, from the sharper, more compressed textures of Tension, through the softer and more fluid qualities of Float, to the expansive and immersive world of Wonder.
The audio was designed in layers, combining a continuous spatial foundation beneath the experience, distinct sound worlds for each state, and elements that responded dynamically to the animation. Blending composition and sound design, the approach sat somewhere between a musical score and a soundscape, with quieter moments deliberately leaving space for the visuals and environment to breathe.
Using L-Acoustics L-ISA spatial audio, ON THE SLY designed the mixes with the physical environments in mind from the outset. This allowed the audio to become part of the architecture of the installation, with sound movement and positioning supporting the relationship between colour, visuals and emotion.
Across the installation, sound worked in step with the visuals to create an experience visitors could feel as well as see.
This project forms part of ON THE SLY’s work creating immersive and spatial audio experiences for installations, environments and brand activations around the world.
